Nichiren Shoshu in Chicagoland and throughout Midwest and Southern states (17-state map)

Myogyoji Temple

Myogyoji Temple is a Nichiren Shoshu (日蓮正宗) Buddhist temple in West Chicago, Illinois. Together we chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, study the Gosho, and share the Mystic Law so every person can reveal Buddhahood.

Whether you are encountering Buddhism for the first time or deepening long-standing faith, you will find priests and members ready to welcome you, answer questions, and chant alongside you. Each meeting, study session, and ceremony is a moment to polish the mirror of life and draw out wisdom, courage, and joy.

Our community now embraces practitioners across 17 Midwestern and Southern states. Explore the interactive Hokkeko map to see how Myogyoji Temple supports believers throughout the region.

The Goal of Practice

The purpose of Buddhism is to awaken the highest life-condition of enlightenment—profound wisdom, indestructible happiness, and the strength to overcome every obstacle. Practice is inseparable from daily life. By chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, performing Gongyo, and participating in study and ceremonies, we experience visible benefit and inner transformation.

Two Aspects of Practice

Nichiren Shoshu shows that practice flows in two directions that constantly support one another.

  • For oneself: Chanting, doing Gongyo, studying, and attending ceremonies to polish our lives.
  • For others: Sharing Buddhism so friends and family can begin their own practice—this is shakubuku.

Our Shared Mission

Nichiren Daishonin entrusted us with two great vows: to reveal our own Buddhahood and to help realize a peaceful, happy world through the spread of the Mystic Law—kosen-rufu. Visit Myogyoji Temple, connect with the community, and experience first-hand how True Buddhism brings out courage, clarity, and joy.

“Letter to the Ikegami Brothers”

(Kyodai sho)

“Do not doubt that you committed slander in the past. Otherwise, you will not be able to endure the minor sufferings of this life... A great seeking spirit is essential for fulfilling one’s Buddhist practice. Since you have continued to uphold the Lotus Sutra, you are now eradicating your past grave offenses.”

—Nichiren Daishonin, Letter to the Ikegami Brothers (Gosho, p. 981)
