How Do I Start?
Begin by visiting the temple, chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, and joining Gongyo and study meetings; the temple offers beginner-friendly times to get started.
Step-by-step path
- Visit Myogyoji Temple. Attend an introductory meeting or observe Gongyo. Greeters will guide you through etiquette and answer questions.
- Chant at home. Start with five minutes of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo twice a day. Use a comfortable chair and focus on your determination.
- Join Gongyo sessions. Practicing with others builds rhythm and confidence. Slow Gongyo on Wednesdays is perfect for beginners.
- Study and connect. Read introductory articles, meet members in your area, and ask for encouragement when obstacles appear.
Preparing to receive the Gohonzon
As you build consistency, speak with the chief priest about receiving the Gohonzon. The temple will help you set up a Buddhist altar (butsudan) and explain how to care for the scroll respectfully.
You are never alone. Members throughout the Midwest and Southern states chant together daily. Reach out for support anytime.
