What is Itai-doshin?
Itai-doshin means “many in body, one in mind.” Though different as individuals, we unite in purpose to advance faith and kosen-rufu together.
The spirit behind itai-doshin
Nichiren compared unity to multiple waves combining into a single great wave. When believers share the same determination—to protect the Three Treasures and spread the Mystic Law—their combined prayer moves the universe. Itai-doshin is not uniformity; it is mutual respect focused on a shared mission.
Practicing itai-doshin at Myogyoji
- Encourage one another. Send messages, make home visits, and chant with members who are facing obstacles.
- Support temple activities. Volunteer for ushers, cleaning crews, or study facilitators so events run smoothly.
- Resolve differences quickly. When conflicts arise, chant and seek guidance from the priest to restore harmony.
- Share victories. Testimonies of benefit inspire fellow members and strengthen collective faith.
Unity protects the temple and everyone connected to it. When one person gains benefit, the entire community gains strength. When one person struggles, the whole community rallies with daimoku and encouragement.
Itai-doshin and kosen-rufu
The Daishonin wrote, “If the spirit of many in body but one in mind prevails… they will achieve all their goals.” Unity keeps us aligned with kosen-rufu and prevents slander or negativity from weakening our mission. Members across the 17-state region join monthly daimoku campaigns to demonstrate this oneness.
